The Design Challenge

This Mid-Atlantic family of four had a beautifully renovated modern home with a narrow, sloping blank slate of a backyard. They longed for a firepit gathering area, as well as grilling and outdoor dining spaces, with a clean, spare aesthetic and muted color palette to complement their house. They also wanted more privacy and a parking area at the far rear of the property.

The Home Outside Solution

Home Outside developed two draft designs, one with an “on-the-angle” orientation, and the other “all lined up.” (See Chapter 3 of Home Outside: Creating the Landscape You Love for more about aesthetic arrangements for your property.)

The Final Designs

After reviewing the draft plans with the Home Outside designer, the clients decided they preferred the all-lined-up orientation and requested two final versions with the firepit and dining areas in different locations. Despite the narrow lot, and even with the addition of the parking area at the back of the yard, both designs incorporated space for all the features and activities the clients desired.
