Project Summary

These Phoenix homeowners love hanging out with their neighbors, but they didn’t have the outdoor spaces to accommodate larger parties.

Home Outside put together a landscape design that combined curb appeal, kids’ play space, and cocktail-hour lounge area, with a modern aesthetic.

Final Landscape Design Plan

The clients asked us to combine their favorite elements of the two designs into one hybrid final design. Click on the hotspots to learn more about the design.

5’ wide planting bed at edge of sidewalk features low, spreading, drought-tolerant shrubs and perennials, backed by a low pony wall, +/- 2.5’ to 3’ tall. The planting bed is a friendly, welcoming edge to the property that still allows views into and out of the front yard.

Square concrete unit pavers lead neighbors into the front yard for lounging under the arbor or games on the lawn. The path continues to the gate into the backyard for pool parties.

A large play lawn for kids could be either a water-wise artificial turf surface or a natural lawn.

The front walkway is comprised of large offset concrete pavers set in decorative gravel mulch. Dry-shade-tolerant plants fill out the garden beds on either side of the walkway. Tall planters accent the garden beds, bringing verticality and increased interest to this garden area.

A large shade arbor extends over both front and backyard, over the existing privacy wall. In the front yard, the arbor shades a concrete gathering area, featuring comfy outdoor furniture and a large gas fireplace/table.

Large rectangular moveable planters on wheels provide some separation from the neighbor’s propert, but can be moved out of the way to increase the usable space under the arbor for larger parties.

A large wrap-around wooden storage cabinet with sliding doors holds pool utilities as well as additional outdoor tools and toys.
