How It Works

You’ll receive a link to our easy-to-use online form to upload photos and answer simple questions about your existing conditions and your style preferences.

Base Plan

Your designer will create and confirm the Base Plan of your garden area’s existing conditions, including nearby elements, plants to keep, sunlight conditions, etc.

Draft Plan Review

When your draft design is ready, you’ll have a 20-minute Zoom screenshare meeting to review the plan and discuss adjustments with your designer.

Final Design

Your beautiful final design will be a colorful plan view and a diagrammatic planting plan. Plant list coordinates with photos of the plants and links to find them online.

You’ll Receive

A beautiful planting design for your garden bed (up to 300 sq. ft.) that includes:

Planting Plan

You’ll get a full-color, high-res, printable 11×17” PDF of your final custom garden bed design complete with designer’s notes, planting plan, and a specific plant list perfect for your space and style.

Designer’s Notes

Designer’s notes will call out the garden design’s structure, features, seasonal interest, and intentions as well as any coordinating edging or related hardscape materials.

Plant List

Your plan includes a detailed Plant List of specific plants that you and your designer choose to suit your preferences and garden size, e.g., Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus.’

What information will you need from me to create a design?

We’ll send you a link to complete a quick online workbook in which you’ll tell us about your space, style, and preferences, and send us photos of where you’d like to plant your garden.

How long will it take for me to get my design?

Once you submit your workbook, you’ll have your design in about three weeks. Sometimes the designer needs to clarify your information, or it can take a day or two for the designer and client to find a mutually convenient time for the Zoom consultation, but we aim to get your design to you as quickly as possible.

Is there a property size limit for your design services?

The Home Outside Garden Bed Design Service is for planting areas of up to 300 sq. ft. Please use our Contact form to request a custom quote for a larger garden bed.

Do I have to have a property plan or survey in order to use this service?

No. If you have one, that’s great, but if not, we’ll create your base plan according to satellite data, your measurements, and photos. You’ll have an opportunity to correct any inaccuracies in the base plan before we create your design.

Is every design unique? Or do you use design templates?

We do not use templates or cookie-cutter designs; every design is created to suit the client’s needs and preferences, as well as the unique features of the surrounding context.

Will I get a delivery of live plants with this service?

This design service does not include shipment of live plants or installation services. You will get a planting plan with a plant list that you can either hand off to a landscape contractor to gather and install, or use the list to shop confidently.

Will I own my final design?

Yes, you (the client) will own your final design.

If you post my project on your site, how will my privacy be protected?

We respect our clients’ privacy and will never reveal your name or address, only a general location such as “Boston area” or “Northern California.”

How many 3D Views will I get with my purchase?

If you purchase a Partial Property Design + 3D Views, you’ll receive four views total. With Full Property Design + 3D Views, you’ll receive up to eight views total.

Is there a property size limit to the 3D Views Add-On?

The size limit for Partial Property Designs is 0.25 acre. The size limit for Full Property Designs is 0.5 acre. For larger properties, contact us at [email protected] to get a custom quote, or reach out to your Home Outside designer directly to discuss options.

Will I get a working 3D model with my 3D Views?

You will not get an interactive 3D model, but you will receive multiple views, or snapshots, of the 3D model from different angles. The multiple views will describe the full landscape scene.

How long will it take to create my 3D views?

It will take about one extra week to create a 3D model of your property and to incorporate the 3D Views into your final Home Outside design package.

Can I decide to add 3D Views to my service during or after the design process?

Yes! Ask your Home Outside designer to add 3D Views to your service at any time.

Do the plants in my Home Outside design 3D views represent specific plant species?

All planting shown in your 3D views is conceptual, unless otherwise stated in your Home Outside design notes. 3D Views will help describe the overall design intent for your proposed garden beds, including approximate height, width, evergreen versus deciduous, and tree versus shrub or perennial.

Where can I read the fine print?
