The Design Challenge
One of the joys of doing remote design is that we get to work with homeowners around the world. So we were delighted, one cold winter day, when we were asked to design a landscape makeover for a property in picturesque southern Brazil. The client wanted a sustainable homestead design that would surround her home (which was full of large windows) with lush plantings and as many edible plants as possible. She also wanted space to entertain her friends and family.
The Home Outside Solution
Home Outside put together a complete landscape makeover, introducing bold, curving planting beds that frame outdoor living spaces, accessed by graciously meandering crushed gravel paths. Easy-to-maintain raised garden beds feature raspberries, grapes, and blueberries, and an orchard is planted with fig, orange, and lemon trees. Small water features provide focal points visible from inside the house. A solar hot water tower makes the most of a sunny spot in the backyard, while a shaded pergola keeps the parking area cool. An outdoor grill nestled among the plantings makes it easy to cook and dine outdoors.
The client told Home Outside, “I am so happy I can’t even stand it! Everybody loves what you did. I am very pleased and grateful for what you have created.” She asked us to create a planting plan to communicate the planting details to her contractors.
